Spirit of God, Descend Upon My Heart

I ask no dream, no prophet ecstasies,

no sudden rending of the veil of clay,

no angel visitant, no opening skies;

but take the dimness of my soul away.

~George Croly, 1867

  1. Thanks for the quotation from George Croly's hymn. Terrific prayer. Whether because of sin, or by the constant barrage of worldly propaganda, our spiritual vision can become clouded. The experience of Asaph comes to mind. I began to get quite upset that wicked people seemed to be better off than he was. But when he went into the sanctuary and communed with the Lord, his spiritual insight was renewed, and he saw things from God's perspective again (Ps. 73:1-3, 17).

    Your quotation caught my eye this morning because today is the 149th anniversary of Croly's death. If you want to know a bit more about him, I invite you to check out my daily blog on hymn history, Wordwise Hymns. God bless.
