Running

In one of the "Back to the Future" movies, they laugh the future concept that people would run "just for fun."

I run. I get further behind. Today I ran from here to there, chauffering my son, running errands, stopping to shop for things I could have done without, fighting traffic, facing decisions about which color desk top to get at IKEA and which legs would be the right height and would it fit in the space designated? All the stopping meant I was late picking up A from his hockey camp, then we both ran to the goalie store before it was closed to get a new catcher (goalie glove) which he did need, but had to check a second store before we were sure the first one had the best one.

Then when I got home, I discovered that the drawer set I bought for the desk was the wrong style so had to run back to the store to exchange it. That was my own fault because the picture on the box was clearly illustrating what was inside. The second unit I bought was the wrong color. That was not completely my fault because there was no external indication of color and I didn't even think about the fact that there were three color options on this unit.

It seems all this running is perhaps more a subconscious running away. I didn't get the laundry, dishes or grocery shopping done. I did get supper made, but it was later than usual. I can't think how I'm going to get anything done at all when I'm working all day at another job. So I run to my blog to process through it all.

Once many years ago when we bought a big expensive beautiful house, one couple I deeply respect said "What are you running from?" I didn't understand.

I think I'm starting to.

In I Timothy 6, Paul talks about the pitfalls of a lust for money and possessions. He then warns Timothy:

"Run for your life from all this. Pursue a righteous life—a life of wonder, faith, love, steadiness, courtesy. Run hard and fast in the faith..." (I Tim. 6:11, The Message)

  1. I've had days like this - where every road has to be traveled twice or three times and at the end you wonder whether you wouldn't have been farther ahead if you'd just stayed in bed!

Always we are in the tug-of-war between what we want vs. what we're given/happens. There are no obvious answers, but you're paying attention. Maybe that's the important thing, for now.
