Pearls Before Swine

Darkness eats volcanic mountains
..........day’s deceptive beauty consumed
Glaring street lights rise from sea to sky
..........ascend the unseen hill
..........like inferno’s smoke
Garish women
..........as spoiled grapes, cluster
near busy

Traffic lights, blinking
..........tail lights
..........economy hotels on seedy streets
Deserted marketplace,
..........silent suitors, canopied
..........echoes of florentine kiosks on stained asphalt
Barter silently with patrons

I want to communicate clearly
..........hear someone who doesn’t
..........speak like their mouth holds clothespins
Like good wine,
..........seasoned, speak the language.
Silence the Friday night shouting
..........the raucous car alarm
..........interminable blaring
Which resurrects itself by unseen forces
.........hourly
Spoils sleep

There is no beauty
..........when light hides
Darkness reveals
..........what rich pockets blind
Without the mesmerizing distraction of day
..........the sordid other city emerges
The picture no one sees
..........when drinking pina coladas
And embarking on shore excursions

You’ll love it
It’s so beautiful

..........the promise echoes empty
Every face/life/soul a story

Daylight closes the book.
